The congress was attended by participants from 11 countries with presentations grouped in 9 scientific symposia. Previous congresses have been held in the following cities: Tokyo (1991), Kiel (1994) and Nara (1996). P. Rudan was the President of the Organizing Committee of the Congress, M. Peričić was the Secretary General, and all the employees of the Institute at that time were members of the Organizing Committee. The Congress confirmed the position of physiological anthropology as a scientific discipline and during its holding, on September 8, 1998, the International Society of Physiological Anthropology (ISPA) was founded. M. Sato (Japan) was elected president, P. Rudan (Croatia) as vice president, and H. Harada (Japan), H. Greil (Germany) and N. Smolej Narančić (Croatia) as secretaries.
