3rd LINEE+ Conference:

“Linguistic and Cultural Diversity in Space and Time”

&

“PhD Training Workshop in Multilingualism Research“

Dubrovnik, 28 April – 2 May 2014

The 3rd LINEE+ international conference “Linguistic and Cultural Diversity in Space and Time” was held in the Inter-University Centre (IUC) in Dubrovnik, from 28th April to 2nd May 2014. The main goal of the conference was to continue to critically examine multilingualism after the previous two LINEE conferences (in 2010 and 2012), also held in Dubrovnik, and to gather numerous international researchers from various disciplines (such as linguistics, anthropology, sociology, psychology, economics, cultural studies, history, philosophy, etc.), as well as other stakeholders. The participants had a chance to discuss and share insights on diversity, both in their presentations and in less formal settings, as well as to propose new interdisciplinary perspectives in research and practice of linguistic and cultural diversity.
The conference was attended by more than a hundred researchers from 26 countries, from Europe, Asia, North America and Africa. Apart from experienced researchers, the conference was also attended by numerous junior researchers. The participants presented their research studies within the framework of five thematic sessions:

1) Historical multilingualism – Lessons from the past

2) Commodification of languages – Liaisons dangereuses

3) Multilingualism and material life – Talking” things

4) The dark side of multilingualism – Social visions and divisions

5) Multilingual brains and minds – Joys and fears?

6) General session

After the conference, a „PhD Training Workshop in Multilingualism Research“ was held in the same venue, from 30th April to 2nd May 2014. The workshop was the seventh from the series of LINEE workshops and the first to be held in Dubrovnik. The goal of the workshop was to allow junior researchers to gain knowledge on multilingualism and similar areas of study, in a special form of teaching which consisted of lectures by four experienced researchers, after which PhD students presented their own research in the form of poster presentations.

The 3rd LINEE+ conference was organized by LINEE+, Institute for Anthropological Research, Zagreb (INANTRO), Croatian Anthropological Society, Scientific Council for Anthropological Research of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts, and IUAES Commission on Linguistic Anthropology.
